Such is the case with an original 1958 Gibson Korina Flying V, recently purchased by Joe Bonamassa for his Three Kings tour, which honors blues legends Freddie King, B.B. King and Albert King, who favored the Flying V. One of the Great White Whales of the guitar world, the original run of Korina Flying Vs hold a mythic place among collectors.

Albert King is synonymous with the Gibson Flying V - he played a 1959 model, and then a mid-'60s model when that guitar was lost. From 1972 onwards he played a custom guitar based on a Flying V named 'Lucy', which was built by Dan Erlwine.

Albert King was one of those lucky owners, born under a bad sign or not. He had a 1959 Flying V, a right-handed one, which, just like Jimi Hendrix after him, he played upside down. He may have been playing the space-age guitar, but he was a bluesman's bluesman through and through.

The History of the Gibson Flying V

One guitar featured on the tour was actually owned and played by Albert King: a custom-made Flying V-style guitar nicknamed Lucy, on loan from actor Steven Seagal. According to Bonamassa, this was the Lucy that Albert played for most of the '70s and '80s. "Dan Erlewine built it for him in 1972," Bonamassa says. "It's a little unruly to play.
