Uchi Kanji

Introduction Kanji is the final writing system for us to learn (if you haven't read these yet, please take a look at hiragana and katakana first). Clocking in at a whopping 2,136 characters currently featured in the Jouyou (daily-use) list and thousands beyond, Kanji is comprised of characters mostly borrowed from ancient Chinese characters.

Uchi Kanji

As this example shows, " uchi " and " soto " (written as 内 and 外 in kanji), are a pair of Japanese words that mean "inside" and "outside." Like other word pairs that describe position or direction, such as "on/off" or "up/down," they help us see different dimensions of things. 内 (Uchi): Inside / In-Group 外 (Soto): Outside / Out-Group


Hiragana, Katakana, dan Kanji Nihon no Uchi (日本の家)

This meaning of うち (uchi) is partially related to the word for 'inside' or 'inner'. While this word is also pronounced うち (uchi), it's written with the kanji 内。 In this sense, うち (uchi) can mean family, but more accurately, it refers to anyone who makes up your household - your 'inner' circle, if you like.

In fact, when 中 and 内 are used for time periods, 中 tends to be combined to make jukugo words, such as 今年中, while 内 is commonly used alone, in the form of 〜の内 or its kana version 〜のうち. Yoshiyuki, M. (1989). Both 中 (naka) and 内 (uchi) often translate to ''inside,'' but they don't refer to quite the same ''inside.''.
