Introduction to the History of Art Paul Cézanne (1839 1906)
One of the most influential paintings in Cézanne's oeuvre, 'Boy in a Red Waistcoat' is an important forebear of later Fauvist and Cubist works. To capture the image of the boy, Cézanne used a series of blocks of colour. He essentialised the different elements in the piece, simplifying the forms down into shapes.

He left his hometown of Provence for Paris in 1861 to pursue his artistic career. It was there that he met Camille Pisarro, who became Cezanne's mentor and taught him while he was there.
